Sharing a meal with loved ones is a cherished experience that brings us closer together. The aroma, taste, and flavor of the food create lasting memories and connections. But for individuals with taste and smell impairments, this experience can be challenging, leaving them unable to fully enjoy the culinary delights.

In light of this, the World Taste & Smell Association is proud to announce the first annual #DeliciousForAll Culinary Challenge. This groundbreaking initiative aims to raise awareness about taste and smell impairments while fostering inclusivity in the world of dining. In collaboration with renowned culinary experts and scientists, you are invited to join them on this flavorful journey to celebrate the power of taste and smell, innovating, learning, and creating unforgettable culinary moments.

The prevalence of taste and smell disorders varies depending on the study, but it is estimated that 15–20% of adults worldwide experience some degree of impairment. This number increases with age, with up to 40% of adults over the age of 65 experiencing some degree of smell impairment.

In the United States, 12.4% of adults over the age of 40 have measurable smell dysfunction, and 3% have anosmia (no sense of smell) or severe hyposmia (minimal sense of smell).

Amplified by the global COVID-19 pandemic, the number of individuals worldwide experiencing compromised taste and smell has surpassed 50 million. Temporary seasonal allergies, chronic sensory disorders, and the lingering effects of COVID-19 have left many unable to fully savor the joys of food. It’s time to change that.
